From the sundial to the grandfather clock, much time has passed. Invented at the end of the XII th century, the clock was a rather imprecise instrument generally equipped with one hand to indicate only the hour. By 1657, it became possible to measure time exactly, as the Dutch inventor, Christian Huygens, revolutionized the art of clock making by successfully applying the rudimentary knowledge of pendulums. Thanks to this invention, the use of a minute hand became general practice. Clockmakers then began perfecting the mechanism in order to make the clock function longer. Seeing they had to use weights that were far too heavy for wall mounted clocks, they created a chest in which the clock and mechanism could be placed. Thus, the grandfather clock was born!

Your model is inspired by the grandfather clocks made in London in the 1770's. The originals are models that are much sought- after by collectors. It's square face is topped by an arch displaying a rotating sun and moon. In the center, another small face indicates the date, lunar phases and tide tables. The whole is trimmed with little gold leaves that are also found on this exquisitely refined unit. Lacquered and ornamented clucks, such as these, are very rare and considered to be priceless.
