Whether looming above a web of narrow and winding prairie waterways,
or perched atop a river bank like a citadel watching over its keep,
the windmill imparts an almost mythical blanket over the Dutch
countryside. Though only 200 of the remaining thousand or so are
operational today, the windmill is as intrinsic to the lore and
culture of Holland as cheese, clogs, and speed skating. The first
Dutch windmill was erected in the 13th century. The windmill's most
popular raison detre, however, manifested itself in the mid 1400s when
the device was used to pump water. Hence, the emergence of the polder
mills that kept the Netherlands from flooding during the war.
In the 16th century, windmills were swayed into new vocations to better serve the new industrial landscape, harnessing window power in order to grind grain or power sawmills. Often built within city limits, windmills are generally several storeys high to benefit from the full impact of the wind.
