For Joseph-Armand Bombardier, the invention of the SKI-DOO
snowmobile was a childhood dream come true. It was also the
birth of
an important industry, and a very popular sport. J. Armand had a
passion for mechanics; by the age of l5 be had already built his
first motorized sled. His dream was to manufacture a small
vehicle
for winter travel. One of the most important inventions of his
career came into being in 1935: a traction system using
sprockets
and tracks. In the years that followed, J. Armand and his team
produced tracked vehicles for utility purposes and the military.
The
year 1957 saw two important breakthroughs: a new rubber track
was
developed, and lighter engines became available. At last, J.-
Armand's dream was within reach. In 1959, J. Armand
Bombardier sells
his first little yellow snowmobiles.
You could say that the MX Z snowmobile celebrates its 20th
birthday
in 2001. Model year 1981 was when an MX version of the
celebrated
Blizzard model came out - and already, MX meant sophisticated
suspension. The Formula MX innovated in 1985 with its
aluminum
chassis which incorporated, in aircraft-style tubular steel
Structure. In 1993, with the triumphant arrival of the Formula MX
Z
model, the famous ''SKI-DOO yellow" colour reclaimed its
leadership
position among high-performance snowmobiles. The spirited
and agile
MX Z pioneered the cross-country snowmobile, now tile hottest
type
of snowmobile in the industry.
