A wide, wall-ringed court, the chief feature of Isengard was the
great black tower of Orthanc, home of the wizard Saruman.
Once a
courtyard of trees and gardens, Saruman had his Orc servants
tore
out the greenery to fuel his fuming ovens and forges. The
sacking
of Isengards courts is a metaphor for the wizards descent into
darkness. Isengard, once a place of beauty, became a
wasteland of
grey decay and burnt earth, pitted with Ore infested caves and
holes
where Saruman breeds his secret Uruk-hai army.
