The Chrysler Building undoubtedly represents the most remarkable construction work in all of New York City. Built during the height of the automotive boom, at the request of Walter Percy Chrysler, this flamboyant skyscraper is a tall tribute 319 meters (1,046 ft.) to Art Deco design. Featuring arches of shimmering metal and triangular windows, the crown of this skyscraper recalls the chrome hubcaps and radiator grills of the famous auto manufacturer's vehicles. This gleaming arrow is the work of architect William Van Allen. For a while, this prestigious building held the record for the world's tallest building. But after overtaking the Eiffel Tower for the title in 1930, the Chrysler Building was eclipsed by the Empire State building on May 1, 1931
